With only five wins on the season in 39 chances, it does not appear it could get much worse for the New York Knicks. That was until first-year head coach Derek Fisher decided to give one of the more embarrassing speeches you will ever hear during one of the team’s timeouts during Thursday’s 120-96 loss to the Houston Rockets.
It may not seem like that bad of a speech on the surface. In fact, some would argue that there is nothing silly or embarrassing about it at all.
Of course, then I would have to quickly reference that Fisher is not coaching a team with children on the roster. New York is not a pee wee team that needs a quick pep talk. Fisher is talking to professional basketball players. Well, about as professional as one can get considering the Knicks look far from a group that should be competing at the highest level of basketball. The last thing the players want is to hear a speech they were probably told during halftime of one of their high school games.
I can understand Fisher’s need to give some sort of talk to inspire his players. At the same time, I have to imagine the Knicks are far past that point. After losing 14 games in a row, inspiration and confidence goes out the window. At this point, players are more hoping that they do not get demoted or traded, although getting off the sinking ship that is New York via trade would not be the worst thing.
Fisher clearly has no idea what he is doing, which is why his speech during a timeout sums up his rookie season perfectly.
