Coming out of the woodwork are NBA teams that no one was expecting to make a splash this season. Not only are these teams making a splash, they are swimming in pools all alone.
Some teams, like the Golden State Warriors, have been dominating their divisions, conferences and the NBA fanbase just because of the turnaround of the team. Although the Warriors have surprised some, their talent would’ve eventually led them to where they are now. The Warriors nearly beat the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round of the playoffs last season but just couldn’t hang on in Game 7. Although they lost, every NBA fan knew what they were capable of because of such a hard fought series.
The Warriors being a good team should not really surprise anyone, but there are a few teams in the league that have completely shocked the NBA and themselves. The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Atlanta Hawks have been two of the biggest surprises in the league so far this season. The Cavaliers were not any good last season, but after acquiring the likes of Lebron James, Mike Miller and Kevin Love, everyone thought this team was bound for the NBA Finals. But the Cavaliers’ struggles should not be that surprising. The team has yet to mesh together because their star players are used to being the biggest stars on their previous teams. Kyrie Irving was king of the Cavaliers before the real king came back to town, James was the biggest of the big three and Love was the only hope for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Cavaliers are not that bad; they just are not living up to the expectations they had during the offseason. The Cavaliers are just below a .500 ball club sitting in the No. 6 seed of the Eastern Conference. Because the conference is so lackluster, the Cavaliers will still probably make it to the postseason; they just will not go as far as everyone thought they would.
The Hawks have completely shocked fans by transforming from a team that just barely made it to the postseason last year to being the head of the class this season. The Hawks are No. 1 in their conference, four and a half games ahead of the second-place Toronto Raptors. The team’s roster is nearly the same as it was last season when they were a below .500 team. They are on a nine-game win streak and are looking more and more unstoppable with every game.
The league has been flipped upside down; teams are rising from the ashes as top teams fall through the cracks. No one could’ve foreseen such a drastic change in just one season. As fans, it is interesting to see different teams finally get attention, but it makes one wonder: Where were these teams all along?
