Steve Nash has been doing his own thing since it was announced that he would be unable to play for the Los Angeles Lakers this season due to injury. He has been playing basketball his whole life, and there is no doubt that it has been hard for him the past couple of seasons as he has tried to stay healthy. It takes time to come to the realization that he may not be able to play professional basketball anymore, and to go out the way he did is tough. But he is still a member of the Lakers’ organization, and with so many younger players on the roster, the team could definitely use him on the sidelines and in the locker room.
Nash’s most important contribution to the team at this point would be mentoring players such as Jordan Clarkson and Julius Randle. Players on teams with losing records tend to develop bad habits and start to become engulfed in the losing culture. They do not get to see first-hand what it takes to win and be successful in the NBA. While Kobe Bryant may be one of the greatest players ever, he is not necessarily one who will take players under his wing and show them the way.
This is where Nash can come in, as he can relate to both individuals. Clarkson is a developing point guard who has showed potential, but needs to better understand the game on an intellectual level. Nash has proven to be one of the most selfless teammates in the game, and knows how to make the players around him better. His knowledge of the game can really help Clarkson in his development of becoming a better guard.
While Randle plays a different position, he still has a lot to learn on how to be a professional. Unfortunately, his rookie season ended way too early, but Nash understands the struggle of being injured and what it takes to come back. He can pass on information to Randle about his personal experience of recovering and getting back onto the court. He can share tidbits to help him improve his ball-handling skills or become a better playmaker, two skills that Randle has displayed when on the court despite being considered a power forward.
Other players, such as Nick Young or even Ryan Kelly, can also learn a lot from the two-time MVP. He has always been a great teammate, and even though it may be hard for him, he has a lot to offer the players on the team. He is a true professional who knows what it takes to make it in the league, and would serve as a great role model for any player.
The Lakers would greatly benefit if they can convince Nash to come back and help mentor the team on and off the court.
