How does a team push out to a 10-point lead then collapse and lose by seven? Break down the way the Miami Heat play on a daily basis and you will know exactly why they have become the masters of giving star-deficient teams confidence.
It’s hard to understand why a squad with so many veterans and championship players would find it so difficult to get into late-game offense and finish without being stagnant.
The one consistent thing about the issue is that it usually takes form when Dwyane Wade’s game heads to the bench. That’s normally when Chris Bosh goes into hiding and all off-the-dribble expectations fall on the shoulders of an, at times, capable Mario Chalmers.
It only gets more obvious when Wade’s strained hamstrings continue to fail him in the middle of games. This leads one to believe that president Pat Riley and the Heat organization are out of touch with what their team needs.
Regardless of how many good quarters Chalmers gives them as a scorer, they must wrap their heads around the fact that they are in need of a backup two-guard — something that is truly a shame if they didn’t realize by now. And before you ask, no the latest signing of guard Tyler Johnson to a second 10-day contract does not count as doing their due diligence. That’s particularly the case when he spent his last stint with the team clapping from the bench instead of offering relief.
The bottom line is that the Heat front office has been slacking for the better part of the season and are now in a position where they hope that they can find another D-League surprise like they did in center Hassan Whiteside.
Good luck with that.
