There were high expectations around the Los Angeles Lakers‘ organization for Julius Randle when they drafted him with the seventh pick in the draft. Some were surprised to see him fall that far, and Randle was excited to be playing for the Lakers.
Unfortunately, he got hurt in the first game of the season and is out for the rest of the year. While he is missing out on valuable game experience, Randle will have more time to spend in the film room to learn how to play effectively in the NBA. There are several players who he should be observing, and one of those players is Paul Millsap.
Millsap has thrived in the league as an undersized big man who possesses decent perimeter skills, similar to Randle. He has done a great job of developing an outside shot to go along with his strong offensive game. He uses quickness and strength to score against bigger opponents, and has become a better passer throughout his career.
The veteran has played well enough to earn an All-Star bid this year, and he has deserved it with the level he is currently playing at. He has always been a good player, but has been able to improve his game to fit in the NBA as a power forward. If Randle wants to excel, then he must build upon a solid foundation, similar to what Millsap has done.
Like Millsap, Randle is a relentless rebounder who has solid ball-handling skills that allow him to create his own shot. He is capable of scoring in the paint with his strength, but must learn to be more creative in order to score on bigger opponents. Randle has a lot of potential, and there are several very good, undersized power forwards who he can learn from if he wants to get better.
