The Los Angeles Lakers won an exciting game against the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night, a game that they seemingly had in control until the fourth quarter when the Bulls made a ferocious run. Like many games this year, the Lakers struggled down the stretch, but were somehow able to pull out the victory in the second overtime. The Lakers got good production from a variety of players, something that has not always happened this year. One move that has recently showed promise has been putting Ed Davis and Carlos Boozer on the court at the same time.
Boozer has always been a talented offensive player with a variety of post moves and a strong mid-range game. He has never been a good defensive player though, and oftentimes needs to be flanked by talented defenders to offset his weaknesses. Davis has proven to be a good finisher on offense this year, but does not do much to create his own shot. Instead, he moves well without the ball and plays off of his teammates. He is also arguably the team’s best defensive player, able to provide decent rim protection while being athletic enough to cover his teammates’ mistakes.
Putting the two players together is smart, as it allows both to cover each other’s weaknesses. Boozer is capable of being a go-to guy on offense, and is a good enough passer to get Davis the ball where he can be successful. He is not necessarily an above the rim guy, whereas Davis is. Defensively, Boozer needs a quality big man next to him to provide support, something Davis is capable of doing. The Lakers should continue to play the two big men next to each other in the future.
