Pau Gasol has been one of the best players for the Chicago Bulls this season, giving them the skilled, low-post scorer that they have been missing for years. Many questioned whether Gasol’s game was on the decline, but he has proven that he can still produce on the right team. If the Bulls can get their whole team healthy and Gasol continues to dominate on offense, they will be tough to beat in the playoffs.
Through the first four games in February, Gasol has averaged over 20 points and 14 rebounds, as well as almost four assists and two blocks per game. This includes Tuesday night’s win over the Sacramento Kings, in which he scored 26 points to go along with 16 rebounds. These statistics are made even more impressive by the fact that he is shooting over 60 percent from the field.
Gasol has been a good fit for the Bulls, as they needed more help on the offensive side of the court. He is a very talented player who can score in the mid-range as well as in the post. There are plenty of creators to get him the ball in the right spot, as well as shooters to help space the floor. He does not necessarily have to carry the offense himself, and can instead pick and choose his spots.
The Bulls have several elite defensive options that can help cover Gasol’s weaknesses, and coach Tom Thibodeau has been able to utilize his length in the paint. He often does not have to guard the opposing team’s best post player, which allows him to save his energy.
If Gasol continues to play at this level, it will give the Bulls a great chance at getting through the Eastern Conference playoffs and into the Finals.
