The Miami Heat have been looking for a point guard on the trade market for quite some time now, and with the deadline approaching soon, now is the time for the team make some serious moves to bolster this extremely weak position.
Among the plethora of veteran guards who could potentially be available, one name that has continually popped up is the Oklahoma City Thunders‘ backup point guard Reggie Jackson. Out of all the available players that the Heat could potentially work out a deal for, Jackson has to be priority No. 1.
Jackson’s problem right now in Oklahoma is the lack of consistent minutes, especially with their recent acquisition of guard Dion Waiters from the Cleveland Cavaliers. It also doesn’t help his case that he now is on the court with either Russell Westbrook or Kevin Durant, ball-hungry players in their own right. Jackson has stated from the beginning he feels he is a starting-caliber point guard in this league, and he would win that position immediately with Miami.
Jackson would be a huge boost playing at the starting point guard spot for the Heat. He has averaged 12.8 PPG, 4.0 RPG and 4.2 APG this season, with the latter two being career-highs. These numbers trump anything Mario Chalmers, Norris Cole or rookie Shabazz Napier have brought to the table so far this season in Miami.
The problem here would be the Heat working out a trade that the Thunder would actually agree to. The Heat don’t have a lot of available first-round picks at the moment, and outside of Chris Andersen and Cole, they also don’t have a lot of available players to trade. A third team would have to be involved in order to pull this off, but if it becomes something that is feasible for the Heat, the organization has to pull the trigger.
