Longtime Portland Trail Blazers small forward and 17-year NBA veteran Jerome Kersey sadly and unexpectedly died Wednesday at the age of 52. The Oregon state medical examiner’s office reported Kersey died when a blood clot broke loose from his left calf and traveled to his lungs.

Kersey helped the Trail Blazers reach two NBA Finals and won a title with the San Antonio Spurs in 1999. A team ambassador, he appeared Tuesday with other former Blazers at a Portland high school in celebration of African American History Month just a day prior to his passing.

“Today we lost an incredible person and one of the most beloved players to ever wear a Trail Blazers uniform,” Blazers owner Paul Allen said in a statement. “My thoughts and condolences are with the Kersey family. He will be missed by all of us. It’s a terrible loss.”

Nicknamed “No Mercy” Kersey, and always a huge fan favorite, Kersey retired from basketball in 2001. He was an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2004-05 under former Portland teammate Terry Porter. Current Blazer’s star point guard Damian Lillard tweeted out his thoughts and prayers to the Kersey family shortly following the news of his passing.

Kersey averaged 10.3 points and 5.5 rebounds in 17 seasons with Portland, Golden State, the Los Angeles Lakers, Seattle, San Antonio and Milwaukee.
