It’s been talked about for the last few years, but it appears Kobe Bryant’s retirement plans are starting to come to light. Based on recent comments, there might only be one season left for Los Angeles Lakers fans to see No. 24 grace the hardwood – at least as a player.
According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bryant will retire after next season.
“The L.A. Lakers’ Kobe Bryant has been contemplating life after basketball since he was 22. Now that he’s 36, out due to injury and close to retirement, he says he’ll play one more season and finish his two-year contract, which will net him $25 million.”
While this has to be taken with a grain of salt considering the non-sports source, it’s difficult to ignore considering their ensuing in-depth interview with the Lakers guard.
When asked about when he began regretting how much time basketball took him away from family and friends, he mentioned that it started during his second year in the NBA. He’s clearly had an illustrious NBA career, but how much longer can he continue to pour so much of his time and effort into being the best he can be? Eventually, he’s going to have to come to terms with the fact that his body can’t handle the tortures of playing in the NBA anymore.
There will continue to be a lot of talk – and conflicting reports – over the next year regarding Bryant’s plans moving forward. However, if his latest comments are true, the 2015-16 season will be his last.
