It was a Game 3 that one would expect in the NBA Finals, not the second round of the Eastern Conference. The Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers participated in a very physical outing that saw tempers flare and plenty of missed calls. From Pau Gasol‘s possible hamstring injury to LeBron James’ botched layup and J.R. Smith’s tying 3-pointer, there were plenty of storylines to be entertained, but then it happened.
It was one of two moments that the Bulls have been waiting for. Obviously it was not winning the title, but instead a crucial piece to winning the championship. Derrick Rose finally had his defining moment since suffering multiple knee injuries over the last three season. As time expired, Rose threw-up a 3-pointer just right of the top of the key and banked it in, giving Chicago the win, 99-96.
The game-winner was part of a 30-point performance including a heroic fourth quarter in which Rose delivered 14 points. After struggling through the first half, the point guard erupted offensively and with Jimmy Butler, the two trumped the duo of Smith and James.
This was a turning point, not just in the series, but in Rose’s career and the Bulls’ title chances. He had flashes of brilliance in the first round, but his performance in Game 3 against Cleveland is an encouraging sign. Rose was able to get to the rim, he offensive rebounded and he got his teammates involved.
It feels like this series is going seven games and will continue to increase in physicality. Injuries could also become a problem. With the history that Rose has, the Bulls are aware of the unfortunate possibility that injuries could act up. His career could end at any moment, but I love the way he is playing right now and he seems to be growing stronger with every game. The buzzer-beater victory and huge fourth quarter will only help to boost his confidence and the Bulls’ chances of victory.
