The Boston Celtics had high hopes entering free agency this summer. However, most of the stars are staying put, and the rest fail to recognize that Boston exists. The team was holding its breath with hopes that Kevin Love would at least arrange a meeting with them, but he recently announced his plans to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now, the Celtics must turn their attention to less talented, more attainable targets.
And they are doing just that.
Along with the recent signing of Amir Johnson, the Celtics have been linked Robin Lopez, as well as former Celtic Gerald Green, per Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.
The team also placed a call to Corey Brewer shortly after free agency began last night.
If signed, none of these players will turn the Celtics into a championship contender next season, but each are proven NBA players who will help address a need. That being said, the Celtics should not be looking to sign somebody just for the sake of signing them.
Lopez would give the Celtics a defensive-minded seven-footer. Had he not missed time due to injury, he likely would have posted a third consecutive season with 100-plus blocks. Lopez had more blocks last year than both seven-footers currently on the Celtics’ roster, Kelly Olynyk and Tyler Zeller, despite missing over 20 games. He’s not an elite rim protector, but he’s one of the better ones in the league and would be a vast improvement for the Celtics.
Lopez should be a top priority, as the one thing the Celtics need more than anything else is size.
Green was the a first-round pick for the Celtics back in 2005. His short time in Boston was highlighted by his ability to dunk — he won the Slam Dunk Contest in 2007 — and not much else. He has since developed into a pretty decent three-point shooter and has carved out a nice role for himself with the Phoenix Suns. While the Celtics wait on the development of young guards like James Young and R.J. Hunter, the addition of Green and his career 37 percent three-point percentage would be a nice luxury off the bench.
Brewer had a strong season with the Houston Rockets. A wing player known for his defense, Brewer has also shown an ability to score the basketball. Along with his skill set, he possesses championship experience having won a title with the Dallas Mavericks and two titles with the Florida Gators. Though he would be a nice veteran addition for the Celtics, Brewer is by no means a necessity.
Celtics fans may be disappointed with these names, but it’s time to come back down to earth. These mid-tier free agents are the ones the Celtics will be focusing on during free agency. None of these players are flashy and none are superstars, but they all provide something of value.
