Chicago Bulls "Closing In" On Deal To Bring Back Mike Dunleavy

The Chicago Bulls are reportedly “closing in” on a deal to re-sign forward Mike Dunleavy for three years and $15 million. The move is huge for the Bulls, as LeBron James had made it known that he wanted Dunleavy to join him with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

If you’ve ever watched an Iowa State men’s basketball game, Fred Hoiberg, the Bulls’ new coach, loves to spread the floor with three-point shooters. Last season, four of his five starters had the ability to knock down the three-point shot consistently, and Dunleavy is the only current Bulls regular to have shot over 40 percent from the three-point line in 2014-15, as he shot a ridiculous 48 percent. Retaining Dunleavy is a big step in the right direction for Hoiberg’s offense.

With the Bulls doing everything they can to fix their putrid offense from the past couple of years, it’s going to take more than just Dunleavy to fix the issues. It’s possible that Doug McDermott finally gets a real chance with Hoiberg now in charge, but the Bulls still need at least two more knock-down shooters to become a more consistent offensive team. Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler are tremendous players, but neither is a great shooter, and Hoiberg needs shooters for his offense to work.

Dunleavy’s return isn’t all about his offense; he’s long and lanky, which helps him defensively, and he’s one of the best in the NBA at stepping in and taking a charge. With Joakim Noah, Butler and Dunleavy, the Bulls should still have one of the best defensive units in the league.

With the coaching change, likely re-signing Butler and Dunleavy and a healthy season from Rose running the point, the Bulls are a couple of shooters away from being the biggest threat in the Eastern Conference to the Cavaliers.
