Only a day after agreeing to a five-year, $110 million deal with Kevin Love, it appears the Cleveland Cavaliers already have their eyes set on a future without the All-Star power forward.
According to Sporting News, GMs from around the NBA believe Love could be playing elsewhere before the 2016-17 season rolls around.
Executives around the league told Sporting News on Wednesday that Love eventually could wind up back on the trading block, but the Cavs needed to re-sign him rather than risk losing him for nothing in return. Thompson deserves a starting spot, and the Cavs are confident that, eventually, a smaller lineup with Thompson at center and Love at power forward will work.
But if not? “Maybe in February or in the summer, you could see Love being talked about,” one league executive said. “If he stays healthy next year, that is what is most important. If he plays 75 games or so, then he is still going to have a lot of value, even if his numbers are not great. So it is still a chance for them to get assets going forward and if you gave up the No. 1 pick, you need to be able get something that will help long-term.
As crazy as it seems at first, it makes a ton of sense. The Cavaliers would have looked pathetic had they given up Andrew Wiggins, the 2014 top overall pick, for Love, only to watch him leave via free agency the following offseason. Instead, they re-signed him and kept him on board, hoping they could find a way to recoup some of their losses with a trade.
Chances are there will be several interested parties hoping to land Love if he is in fact made available, including the Los Angeles Lakers. While the Cavaliers certainly won’t give him away for free, it’ll give them an opportunity to get something in return for Love while still moving on from the third wheel that cost them a potential superstar.
We’ll see what happens as the 2015-16 season draws closer, but this is definitely something to keep an eye on moving forward.
