The Cleveland Cavaliers ended the season by losing in the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors in a heartbreaking 4-2 series loss. The injuries were too much for even LeBron James to handle. After the series was over, Cavaliers general manager David Griffin expressed he wanted to sign a playmaker in the offseason.

But before the Cavaliers could sign a playmaker, the first order of business was to re-sign their own free agents.

Timofey Mozgov had a team option of nearly $5 million and the Cavaliers decided to pick it up. Mozgov was exactly what the team needed after Anderson Varejao went down. He provided the Cavaliers with toughness inside, a legitimate center, and someone who could even provide offensive scoring inside.

During the season, there was endless speculation about whether or not Kevin Love would leave the Cavaliers and go someplace else. Love opted out of the final year of his contract and did decide to become a free agent. However, like he had been saying the entire season, Love chose to stay with the Cavaliers and signed a five-year, $110 million contract.

James also opted out of his contract and became a free agent. With the salary cap set to rise to nearly $70 million, James decided to opt out and once again sign a max deal. James’ previous contract was for two years and $42.1 million and this new max deal is worth $46.9 million.

James’ new contract also includes a player option for the 2016-17 season. With the new TV deal set to increase the cap to unprecedented levels, James continues to position himself to earn the most amount of money possible.

The Cavaliers extended qualifying offers to Matthew Dellavedova, Iman Shumpert and Tristan Thompson. This made Dellavedova, Shumpert and Thompson restricted free agents. If any of their restricted free agents sign offer sheets, the Cavaliers can match them.

Dellavedova and the Cavaliers were making progress early on in free agency, engaging in a discussions around a multi-year deal in the $3-$5 million per year range. Talks haven’t progressed any further since the Cavaliers major priority is to re-sign Thompson and possibly J.R. Smith.

Although Dellavedova still has his shortcomings offensively, Dellavedova is a crowd favorite who always plays hard and is still young enough to improve. The Cavaliers are still planning to eventually re-sign Dellavedova.

Shumpert reached an agreement with the Cavaliers and signed a four-year, $40 million contract. The contract includes a player option in the fourth season of the deal. Shumpert proved to be a defensive expert who can provide shooting to a team with a player that can consistently create open shots for him.

It was reported early in free agency that Cavaliers were going to re-sign Thompson to a five-year, $80 million deal. But negotiations stalled. Thompson and the Cavaliers have been unable to get a deal completed, but the Cavaliers still want to re-sign Thompson. Although Thompson is asking for a deal that almost no one will give him, he does share an agent with LeBron James, and that may influence what deal the Cavaliers give Thompson.

Smith is also a free agent this offseason. With everything that the Cavaliers have been trying to do this free agency, the Cavaliers just haven’t had enough time for Smith. But the Cavaliers still want to bring him back.

Mo Williams signed a two-year, $4.3 million contract in order to return to the Cavaliers. The second year of the deal includes a player option. By signing Williams, the Cavaliers were able to get the playmaker they wanted while not having to spend a lot.

The Cavaliers have also been shopping the non-guaranteed contract of Brendan Haywood in order to upgrade their roster.

Although owner Dan Gilbert will have to pay a high luxury tax because his team will be well over the salary cap, the Cavaliers are in a position to contend for several years and possibly win it all next season because of the talent on the team.
