After nine seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, it probably seems strange for Matt Bonner to envision himself in another team’s jersey. That might be the direction he is headed in this summer. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Sacramento Kings are attempting to lure Bonner way out to the West Coast, and it might just be tempting enough for him.
It’s no secret that Bonner’s role with the team has decreased as he has gotten older. He was once a consistent contributor and tactical weapon for Gregg Popovich, and now he’s been essentially reduced to the NBA equivalent of a walk-on player, only getting minutes when the game has already been decided. Considering that recent adjustments have already given the Spurs roster with dramatically increased floor spacing, that probably won’t be changing this year.
With the Kings, he could be more important. They still could use a fourth big man on their roster, with the statuses of Ryan Hollins and Reggie Evans still in doubt this offseason, and Bonner makes sense as an added dimension to the team. They already have the inside talents to score back-to-the-basket and protect the rim, but the “Red Rocket” could give them some much-needed spacing and three-point shooting (they were 28th in shots made from beyond the arc this past season).
From the Spurs’ side of this, all it may take is a simple conversation with Bonner to convince him he’s still wanted on the team. The possibility of his return hasn’t been rejected by anyone, but there haven’t been any mentions of talks between the two parties. If Bonner wants to win more championships, the obvious choice is to pick his current team, even with a small role that could be enticing to him.
