David Stern stepped down as the commissioner of the NBA less than two years ago, but it looks like his retirement could quickly come to an end. According to the New York Post, friends of Stern are strongly encouraging him to run for mayor of New York City in 2017.
“He’s pretty bored,” one unnamed source told the newspaper. “He’s always been interested in politics, and he’s always been interested in running for office.”
The article states that Stern has given $311,400 to Democrats — including $5,000 to President Obama in 2012 and $30,800 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2011.
Of course, just because his closest friends and colleagues want him to run doesn’t the 72-year-old actually will. The New York post also reports that as of now, Stern has no interest in running.
“I remain a happy Westchester resident and am very busy as a senior adviser to a number of enterprises,” Stern said.
Despite his lack of interest, it does not seem like the persuasion efforts are going to stop any time soon.
“He’s tough as nails,” an unnamed associate of Stern’s told the newspaper. “He’s popular with the black community. New York would be lucky to have him as mayor.”
