The Portland Trail Blazers were one of the the best teams in the NBA, the past few seasons. They have won more than 50 games in consecutive seasons. The problem now is that it appears that the Trail Blazers are in rebuild mode. Portland had the worst offseason of any team in the league. The Trail Blazers lost LaMarcus Aldridge, Robin Lopez, Nicolas Batum, and Wesley Matthews.
Instead of looking to take the next step this season as a contender, the Trail Blazers will likely be lottery bound. The Trail Blazers will no longer have a dynamic duo of Aldridge and Damian Lillard. In the offseason the Trail Blazers landed Al-Farouq Aminu, Maurice Harkless, Ed Davis, Gerald Henderson, Noah Vonleh, and Mason Plumlee.
Portland fans know what to expect from two-time NBA All-Star Lillard. Lillard will be one of the best point guards in the league, and his numbers will only improve with a weaker roster. C.J. McCollum should be one of the better sixth man candidates in league.
The key to the Trail Blazers’ season will be Meyers Leonard. The 23-year-old looked much more comfortable on the floor than he did in his first two seasons. Leonard averaged 5.9 points and 4.5 rebounds. His shooting numbers were incredible. Leonard’s shooting line was 51-42-94. If Leonard would’ve been qualified, he would’ve been the seventh player in NBA history to be part of the 50-40-90 club.
In the postseason, Leonard averaged 7.8 points and 6.6 rebounds. Leonard connected on an impressive 10-13 from three point range.
It will be interesting to see if the Trail Blazers start Leonard. The team has a lot of young options with potential, who can start down low.
One can expect Leonard to average around 12 points and 7 rebounds this season. If Leonard has a big season, the Trail Blazers can surprise some people.
