According to USA TODAY Sports, if the Sacramento Kings don’t begin to turn their 1-7 season around in the immediate future, head coach George Karl could be fired by the end of the week.
Not only is ownership frustrated with the team’s poor performance since Karl took over last February, but the two sides have had a number of disagreements over the last couple of months, including over Karl’s attempt to trade DeMarcus Cousins over the summer.
Not surprisingly, Karl and Cousins have seemed to be at odds ever since the Kings’ ownership took away Karl’s power to trade Cousins. That friction culminated in a reported locker room blowup by Cousins, in which he reportedly cussed out Karl in front of his teammates following Monday night’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Karl wanted to suspend Cousins for the outburst, but the Kings’ brass refused to allow it.
According to sources, the Kings had a team meeting on Tuesday, and reportedly, general manager Vlade Divac was happy with the results. Cousins supposedly apologized to Karl, and said it wasn’t Karl’s fault for the Kings’ slow start.

This is the biggest soap opera I’ve ever seen in my life. The only thing keeping the Kings from firing Karl is the $11.5 million that they owe him through 2018. At this point, it may be better to eat that money, and move on to greener pastures because this situation is getting dangerously toxic.
