Since being drafted No. 3 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, Jahlil Okafor has had multiple maturity issues. In his first press conference with the team, he made it rather clear from his facial expressions and how he carried himself that he wasn’t happy being in Philly. While I can’t necessarily blame him, Okafor’s behavior has taken a turn for the worse over the last few weeks.
According to CSN Philly, Okafor was involved in an incident in October:
“The 19-year-old Sixers’ rookie was outside an Old City nightclub after 2 a.m. on Oct. 4 when he and another person began arguing with two men sitting in a parked car near the corner of 2nd and Walnut Streets, according to a witness. The verbal disagreement escalated and a witness said he saw Okafor try to punch the driver through the open driver’s side window. During the altercation, the driver and passenger exited the car and the passenger pointed a gun in the direction of Okafor and his associate, per the witness.”
Three weeks ago, Okafor was pulled over for driving 108 MPH on the Ben Franklin Bridge which connects Philadelphia to New Jersey.
As if those two incidents weren’t enough, TMZ released a video last week that showed a person, alleged to be Okafor, punching another guy outside of a Boston nightclub. Okafor later essentially admitted that it was him and that he was defending a teammate.
To Okafor’s credit, he issued an apology for his actions in a series of tweets on Sunday afternoon.
I hold myself to a higher standard than anyone else ever could and I’m not proud of some of my decisions over the last few months.

I own my choices both personally and now publicly. At this point I am cooperating and respecting the process I have to go through.

Going forward I don’t want to be a distraction for my team and am grateful for the support and guidance those close to me are giving.

I am 100% focused on my responsibility to the League, my teammates and fans.

Hopefully Okafor can get things turned around before he flushes his promising NBA career down the drain.
