Prior to the start of the 2015-16 NBA season, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr had two back surgeries that have forced him to miss the entire season to this point. The Warriors named assistant coach Luke Walton as the interim while Kerr was on the shelf and all Walton has done is lead the team to the best start in NBA history as the Warriors sit at 19-0. Despite Walton being the guy who makes all the decisions on a nightly basis, the NBA announced on Tuesday that all wins and losses accrued by Walton will be attributed to Kerr’s career record.
This decision by the NBA makes absolutely no sense. Sure, Kerr is able to be around the team during practices and shoot-arounds, but when it goes to game night, Walton is the one making the decisions on rotations, adjustments and lineups, not Kerr. Every single decision that Walton makes has an affect on whether the team wins or loses on any given night, while Kerr is watching from home, a suite or the stands.
To make matters even more confusing, the NBA announced Walton as the Western Conference Coach of the Month for November. How can a guy with a career 0-0 record win a coach of the month award? By the NBA’s logic, Kerr should’ve been handed the award for doing a great job calling shots from his couch.
Commissioner Adam Silver has done a brilliant job since taking over for David Stern, but he completely missed the boat on this one.
