The Phoenix Suns have lost six games in a row (15 of their last 16) to drop their record to 13-31 this season, and head coach Jeff Hornacek is firmly on the hot seat. A bunch of players sitting out on Thursday night suggests a possible move into tank-mode for the Suns, and it’s hard to tell if any major trades are on the horizon.
Markieff Morris is dealing with a shoulder injury right now, and his unhappiness with the Suns’ organization dates back to last summer when his brother Marcus was traded to the Detroit Pistons. Morris has only seen action in 13 games for Phoenix since Dec. 1, but in three games prior to being injured Tuesday night he averaged 14.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while averaging over 27 minutes per contest. The Suns would surely like to showcase Morris for a trade, and once he returns to action they should do so in order to expedite moving him before mid-February’s trade deadline.
The Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans and Cleveland Cavaliers have had reported interest in Morris, with a recent report suggesting Cavaliers players would welcome him. A change of scenery would surely benefit Morris, even if his motives are incredibly childish based on his brother being traded. The Suns would surely like to rid themselves of a player who invites questions about his motivation, which may coincide with his poor performance so far this season.
A two-game suspension in December, for throwing a towel at Hornacek, is a clear reflection that Morris is willing to pout and become a distraction if he has to stay in Phoenix. That possible locker room cancer needs to be removed soon as a disappointing season winds down, even if the Suns have to get less than perceived value back in a trade for Morris.
