LaMarcus Aldridge Is San Antonio Spurs' Biggest Disappointment At 2015-16 Halfway Point

By Dave Daniels

The San Antonio Spurs might be the hottest team currently in the NBA, but they still have room for improvement. Defensively, they are already in postseason form, but they haven’t fully integrated LaMarcus Aldridge into their offense. He is only averaging 15.9 points, 8.9 rebounds and .9 blocks per game so far this season, and those are disappointing numbers. That is his lowest scoring average since his rookie year. He can perform better than this, and that is why the Spurs rolled out the red carpet for him last summer. He has individual skills that can be quite useful in isolations, but San Antonio must figure out how to run their fast break and also utilize LaMarcus’ talents.

Aldridge recently said he was close to signing with the Phoenix Suns in the offseason, and that he knew Kawhi Leonard would be “the guy” in San Antonio. Both of those comments reek of someone who is regretting his decision. The Spurs aren’t a team that is in trouble right now, but they can definitely improve before the postseason begins. And with the Cleveland Cavaliers firing David Blatt midseason, San Antonio has a free path to the NBA title if they can get out of the Western Conference playoffs.

Aldridge is happy to be surrounded by talent for the first time in his career, and he seems relatively pleased with how far his team can go in the playoffs.

“I’ve never been in this position, having a team that’s so stacked and playing at such a high level,” he said to the San Antonio Express-News. “It’s definitely new.”

The Spurs have yet to play to the defending champion Golden State Warriors, and that will be a measuring stick for their ceiling as a team. Tim Duncan‘s brilliance defensively makes San Antonio contenders; however, there are other factors at hand as well. For instance, Aldridge’s play will be a huge part of the Spurs’ chances for success, and if head coach Gregg Popovich can work things out by late April, then they will be in great shape against anyone in the playoffs.
