The Sacramento Kings have been a joke ever since Chris Webber got traded, but they now have another dynamic big man carrying the load and putting up MVP numbers. DeMarcus Cousins might be a mercurial player who doesn’t often get along with his head coach, but he is a superstar. He dropped 56 points on Monday night, and he’s averaging 27.6 points and 11.4 rebounds per game with a PER (player efficiency rating) of 24.97.
He is definitely a top-ten talent in the NBA, and the coaches must account for that when choosing the All-Star reserves.
The Kings have some other interesting elements at play this year as well, and so it is difficult to grade the first half of their season given how much change there has been in the franchise. Rajon Rondo has rejuvenated his career after a tumultuous stint with the Dallas Mavericks, and he is leading the league with 11.8 assists per game. Head coach George Karl appears to be reaching this team at a level similar to his Seattle days. The Kings do need to figure out their wing rotation in anticipation of the playoffs arriving, but they obviously must make the postseason before that matters.
It will be intriguing to see if they are active during the trade deadline; however, it looks as though they will keep this core together considering no one thought they would be eighth place in the Western Conference at this point of the season. You’ve got to feel bad for a player like Ben McLemore that he didn’t end up with a stable team, but maybe he can bring glory to Sacramento once more by complementing Cousins’ inside presence with an outside shooting game. The results for the Kings have been mixed so far, but McLemore has the ability to turn this thing around eventually.
Here is Sacramento’s grade for the season thus far.
