The Milwaukee Bucks had high expectations for this season with a growing young core and a big free-agent signing. Things have not gone as expected, though, and the team still hasn’t figured out how to fit everything together. The Bucks still has a chance to make a late playoff run with adjustments to their rotation, and one player who deserves more playing time is John Henson.
The Bucks have several defensive liabilities down low, but have a couple of talented defenders on the perimeter. The coaching staff still needs to figure out Jabari Parker’s best fit and how Greg Monroe works into the long-term plan. The team does not have a lot of shooting, as Michael Carter-Williams and Giannis Antetokounmpo struggle to stretch the floor.
Henson should still probably come off of the bench, but he should still get more minutes as he is a better fit for the aggressive defensive scheme that the Bucks want to run. He might not be great next to Monroe on offense, but he can help make up for some of the team’s defensive liabilities. He is long and athletic, and is one of the better shot-blockers in the league. He can cover a lot of ground and has the speed to switch to smaller players. Increased playing time could help him expand his offensive game as well.
The coaching staff needs to make some moves to re-energize this team. There is the possibility of a trade, but the Bucks still have time to work through their problems given their youth. Henson would give them a different kind of big man and can change the game on the defensive end. He deserves a chance to prove that he can contribute.
