When the Sacramento Kings made a trade with the Toronto Raptors to acquire small forward Rudy Gay in 2013, they were in search of a veteran star player who could help mentor the young roster while also producing every night. While he’s had his moments, Gay has largely failed to live up to the expectations of the Kings’ front office and now finds his name swirling in trade rumors according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.
With the Kings’ current roster construction, it makes sense that the team is willing to move him. With Rajon Rondo patrolling the point and DeMarcus Cousins being the centerpiece of the offense, there isn’t a whole lot of need for Gay on the wing. The Kings may be better served with a Trevor Ariza type of player who’s a defensive stalwart and solid rebounder from the wing.
The timing also makes sense for the Kings as they are beginning to position themselves to contend in the next couple seasons and could use another piece to the puzzle. They’re not going to be a serious threat to go deep in the playoffs without adding some defensive help.
The only question will be who the Kings can get back in return for Gay. There are certainly a number of teams looking for help down the stretch, but Gay is an expensive option who doesn’t really do much other than score. The list of suitors could be small and not offer a whole lot.
