The Brooklyn Nets currently sit at 14-40, good for the third-worst record in the NBA, and they have already fired head coach Lionel Hollins and general manager Billy King this season. While owner Mikhail Prokhorov has this illusion that the Nets aren’t that far away from winning a championship, guard Joe Johnson can clearly see the writing on the wall.
According to BasketballInsiders.com’s Moke Hamilton, Johnson’s ready to get the heck out of town:
“That huge salary makes Johnson difficult to trade, but as seen in years past, him accepting a buyout after the passing of the trade deadline seems a very likely outcome. One source close to Johnson recently told Basketball Insiders that the 34-year-old marksman is ‘as miserable as he has ever been’ and would welcome a change of scenery.”
As Hamilton states, there’s no chance of any team trading for Johnson because of his 2015-16 salary of more than $24 million, but there would be a number of suitors if Johnson were to accept a buyout. There have already been reports that the Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks would definitely have interest should Johnson become a free agent.
At 34 years old, Johnson’s past his prime, but he still has enough left in the tank to help a contending team. Here’s to hoping that he chooses to accept a buyout and makes a run at a NBA title.
