The Houston Rockets are probably trying to make some moves at the trade deadline, but they should resist the temptation to deal Dwight Howard. The bottom line is that there just isn’t a market for him anymore. If the Washington Wizards with all of their deficiencies aren’t even interested in the big man, then where are the Rockets going to turn to? The Miami Heat have been mentioned as a destination for Howard, but would they really be willing to give up on Hassan Whiteside‘s future potential for all of the issues that Howard has?
If so, then Whiteside has more problems than we know about, and the Rockets should hesitate before making any rash choices.
Howard’s health is an understandable concern as well for any team trying to take him on. He has never been the same player since he left the Orlando Magic, and you have to wonder if Stan Van Gundy had more to do with Howard’s success than many initially realized. The center has skills that can’t be replicated, but he also brings a lot of baggage to the table. This could ultimately force the Rockets to keep him for the remainder of his contract. Or they could waive the big man in order to improve their team chemistry, but that would be quite a large hit to their salary cap.
This isn’t something anyone could have foreseen when Howard joined the Rockets a few years ago, but this is the position that GM Daryl Morey is now in. If he can get a deal that improves the team while also getting rid of Howard, then he should do it. But it doesn’t seem like that will be possible at this moment. People forget that these Rockets were in the Western Conference Finals just last season, and they shouldn’t blow this thing up so soon.
