File this trade under the strangest of the day, as the Atlanta Hawks have acquired Kirk Hinrich from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for a second-round pick just before the 3 p.m. deadline. The Hawks had an extra second-round pick floating around after trading Shelvin Mack to the Utah Jazz earlier in the day, so they essentially traded Mack for Hinrich for some unbeknownst reason.

With the Hawks holding onto Jeff Teague at the deadline, Hinrich now becomes the No. 3 point guard on the team behind Teague and Dennis Schroder. In that role, Mack was averaging 7.5 minutes per game this season and had only appeared in 25 of the team’s 55 games. I’m sure head coach Mike Budenholzer will also use him a little behind Kyle Korver at shooting guard, but largely the deal makes no sense for the Hawks.
As for the Bulls’ side of the deal, Hinrich had fallen out of favor with new head coach Fred Hoiberg after being one of Tom Thibodeau‘s go-to guys off the bench. Hoiberg is desperately trying to fix an offense that has been among the league’s worst in recent years and Hinrich is more of a defensive-minded guard.
If you have an answer as to why the Hawks made this deal, please let me know in the comments section because I can’t figure it out.
