Marc Gasol was ruled out indefinitely on Feb. 9, with a broken right foot. Two weeks later, the Memphis Grizzlies announced that their All-Star center was out for the rest of the season, effectively ending any chance they had at making a deep playoff run.
Gasol commented on his status in a statement released by the Grizzlies via NBA.com.
“It is frustrating to not be on the court with my teammates at this time, but I understand that the focus of this process is on long-term health and stability. I look forward to the road ahead and a full and successful recovery.”
When Gasol initially went down the chances he would return were slim, but with the official announcement being made today that he’s done for the rest of 2015-16, Memphis will have to look at an immediate future without their best player. Considering they were struggling to score with Gasol on the court it will be difficult for them to keep up their current pace as the Western Conference’s fifth seed.
When healthy, Gasol wasn’t playing like himself anyway, as most of his numbers were down from the norm. The 31-year-old center from Spain is averaging 16.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.3 blocks, while shooting just 46 percent from the field.
Despite Gasol’s down season, he was still carrying the Grizzlies. He is first in scoring and blocks, second in rebounds assists and win shares (4.0), and third in PER (17.9). Gasol was still dominating down low, leading the entire league scoring from post-up plays (6.4), via NBA Stats.
Gasol is irreplaceable for the Grizzlies, so without him they don’t stand a chance of making a deep playoff run in the mighty West. In the three games he’s missed so far, Memphis has been lucky enough to play the Brooklyn Nets and Minnesota Timberwolves, but were then exposed on Feb. 21 against the Toronto Raptors when they were only able to put up 85 points in defeat.
