New York Knicks Unsurprisingly Send Jimmer Fredette Back To D-League

With a 26-38 record to this point, the New York Knicks are headed for another bad season. Derek Fisher was fired as head coach, and the team is 3-7 under interim Kurt Rambis right now, so giving an opportunity to a wide array of players looks like a suitable path from here on out.

After a good run with the Westchester Knicks in the D-League, Fredette landed back in the NBA with the Knicks on a 10-day contract on Feb. 22. Rambis immediately said Fredette would not see regular minutes, and that came to fruition with a total of five minutes played in two games. In that limited action, Fredette scored seven points with one three-pointer.

It wasn’t shocking that the Knicks chose not to keep Fredette around due to how little he was used, and with the expiration of that 10-day deal he is back with Westchester in the D-League. In his first game back with the team on Sunday, a loss to Maine, Fredette had 12 points.

Fredette has struggled to stick in the NBA over the last few seasons, which is not surprising since he is an undersized (6-foot-2), offense-first player who has not proven he can hold up defensively at the highest level. It’s worth wondering why the Knicks even brought Fredette aboard, but his lack of playing time points to it being done strictly for some publicity with no connection to a plan for how to use him on the floor.

Fredette’s lack of playing time with the Knicks, outside of his shortcomings, rests mostly on Rambis’ stubborn mediocrity as a coach. Another chance in the NBA may come, but hopefully Fredette will land with a better organization next time around.
