The Boston Celtics, like every other team in the NBA, will be interested in adding Kevin Durant as a free agent over the summer. But all those franchises should cool their jets. Durant isn’t going anywhere. Why would he? The only scenario where he bolts for another team this offseason would be if he joined the Golden State Warriors, and something tells me Durant isn’t the type to hop onto a dynasty in the hopes of chasing a ring with them.
He wants to make his own legacy. And that might be with the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Washington Wizards, but the Warriors have already created their own narrative. And Durant would look overly opportunistic to sign with a team in the process of putting their stamp on the NBA. The Warriors could be two-time champions by the time he is making this decision, and it would be bizarre to see him jump ship just because someone else is having success.
The Thunder deserve to have at least two seasons under head coach Billy Donovan before calling it quits. He won two championships in a row while head coach of the Florida Gators, and that is no small feat. He did have NBA talent like Joakim Noah and Al Horford on that squad, but you always need stars to have success in basketball.
The Thunder still have higher levels they can reach. Westbrook has become a triple-double machine, and if he can figure out when to shoot and when to pass, then Oklahoma City is instantly a contender. The point guard needs to understand that opposing defenses want him to settle for the outside shot, and he can punish them for playing off of him by driving into the lane or dishing to his teammates.
The bottom line is that Durant would be crazy to leave Westbrook. They are both MVP candidates this year, and KD would be wise to sign a contract for one more year in Oklahoma City to see if they can win a title together.
