The Phoenix Suns have looked like a fringe playoff contender the past couple of seasons, but this year they have struggled to overcome injuries and are currently one of the worst teams in the league. They have been unable to attract top free agents, and will once again have to focus on rebuilding this offseason. Luckily, they have a couple of younger players to work with, including Devin Booker, who has been one of the top rookies this season.
Booker has been receiving a lot of minutes due to injuries, and looks more comfortable playing at the professional level. The Suns do not have a lot of elite options on offense, and Booker has had to step up and take more of a leading role. He was mainly a shooter coming out of college, but has shown that he is capable of so much more.
Booker already has ideal size for a shooting guard, and seems to be a more natural fit next to Brandon Knight and Eric Bledsoe, who both play better with the ball in their hands. His outside shooting has been a little inconsistent in recent months as he has been asked to do more on offense, but he still is very good when left open. As he adjusts to the speed of the game, his percentages should go up and opponents always have to be aware of him.
Booker has done a nice job of showing that he is not just a one-trick pony, and is capable of creating for his teammates as well. He has good vision and is averaging over five assists a game in the past month. He still needs to improve on defense, but he has enough athleticism and size to develop into a good defender.
The Suns do not have a lot going for them this season, and they need to make sure that they are putting a premium on developing their younger talent. Booker has the potential to be a very good player, and should continue to get a lot of minutes to close out the season.
