LeBron James made an interesting comment lately about how he’d like to play on the same team with his friends Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul. Check out what James had to say via Bleacher Report:
“I really hope that, before our career is over, we can all play together,” he said. “At least one, maybe one or two seasons—me, Melo, D-Wade, CP—we can get a year in. I would actually take a pay cut to do that. It would be pretty cool. I’ve definitely had thoughts about it. We’ll see.”
That would certainly qualify as a super team, and it could potentially happen with the Cleveland Cavaliers. They might trade Kyrie Irving for Paul and Kevin Love for Anthony, and then they could sign Wade over the summer to a midlevel exception.
That would require Dwyane leaving a lot of money on the table, but that isn’t the main reason this will never happen. Anthony has a no-trade clause. He isn’t going anywhere, so James would have to leave Cleveland for a chance of playing with his buddies.
Can you imagine the firestorm it would create if he left the Cavaliers for the New York Knicks? It would be far more controversial than when he bolted for the Miami Heat, and LeBron’s emotional letter about returning home would seem quite gutless if he ditches Cleveland before winning a title.
Anthony showed his true colors when he chose the Knicks and their money over the Chicago Bulls. If he wanted to go for a ring, then that would’ve been the time to do it. He isn’t going to join LeBron on the Cavaliers unless New York is in absolute shambles.
The Knicks will add enough talent over the summer to keep Carmelo invested in their championship hopes, and Anthony will eventually end his career without a title. Here is hoping that all of this is wrong. It would be so much fun to watch a team featuring James, Carmelo, Wade and Paul, but it just isn’t a realistic possibility. The Cavaliers could probably get one or two of those guys through free agency or a trade, but they will never all play together.
