Golden State Warriors Will Get Credit For Going After Most Wins In A Season

By Dave Daniels

Former player Chauncey Billups was speaking in a pre-game show about how Chris Paul is the best all-around point guard before Wednesday night’s game between the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors, and this is when it became inevitable that Stephen Curry was about to make it rain on head coach Doc Rivers and company.

Curry scored 33 points in the 114-98 victory, and this was a win that should give the Warriors confidence if they face the Clippers again in the playoffs.

Klay Thompson poured in 32 points along with seven 3-pointers, and the Warriors are clearly going for the record of 72 wins in a single season.

“That’s pretty enticing,” head coach Steve Kerr said to NBA.com after the game. “It’s the players who are setting the record. It’s not the organization, so they will absolutely have some say in matters down the stretch in terms of how we approach everything. Could a couple of our guys use a little mental rest and take a night off? Probably. But I wouldn’t do that at the expense of losing games and possibly losing the 1 seed.”

The Warriors have passed a threshold. The San Antonio Spurs aren’t a real threat to overtake them in the standings anymore, and so the Warriors must finally admit publicly what we knew all along — they want to win more than 72 games and go down in the books as one of the best teams of all time. And good for them. But history will look on them quite differently if they lose to the Spurs or the Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs, and that is the double-edged sword of what they’re trying to do. But champions never get to that place without dreaming big, and this seems like it could be the biggest dream of all. We should give credit to the Warriors for finally owning up to how much ambition they truly have.

They next host the Dallas Mavericks, and that is something which should make you feel bad for Dirk Nowitzki. He hasn’t even sniffed the NBA Finals since his squad upset LeBron JamesMiami Heat, and it is a shame that the Mavericks haven’t done a better job of surrounding Dirk with talent.

The Warriors, on the other hand, have done brilliantly with their roster, and they are chasing history as a result.
