Anthony Davis entered the season with a lot of expectations, but he and the New Orleans Pelicans really haven’t achieved any of those. Davis will need to become a leader to have success in Louisiana, because the Pelicans don’t have enough talent to get in the playoffs based on just their stars.
Davis will need to make mediocre players look better than they actually are, and he hasn’t shown that capability at this point. No one is denying that Anthony will be someone who probably goes into the Hall of Fame, but if he wants to win a championship, then things will have to go down much differently. He’ll have to play for a different team, the Pelicans will have to sign a quality free agent or Davis will have to evolve into as good of a teammate and chemistry guy as Tim Duncan.
That third option is a tall order. The first two are definitely within the realm of possibility, but you have to wonder how many NBA stars would thrive in New Orleans. It takes a special kind of player. Chris Paul, for example, is someone who could make it work. But not all NBA players have the discipline to ignore the nightlife in New Orleans, while also putting in the work to become great.
Davis will miss the next three to four months of basketball activity after surgery to his left knee, but he won’t need any work done on his left shoulder.
He won’t participate during this summer’s Olympics in Rio Di Janeiro as a result of the knee procedure, and that is for the best as it concerns the Pelicans. He only played in 61 games this season, and he averaged 24.3 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per contest. Those are great numbers, but they came on a team with no shot of making the postseason. Davis must become a better leader to see his team make the playoffs in the years to come.
