Unless you are the coach of a professional sports team, it can be truly hard to nitpick following a win without looking like a glass half empty kind of guy. That’s particularly true when the victorious team comes in shorthanded. However, that is exactly what people will do in the case of the Miami Heat.
Sure, Dwyane Wade had nine assists, Joe Johnson dished out another seven and the Heat won by 11 points, but what are they thinking by not having backup point guard insurance for games like this when a slight simple illness causes Goran Dragic to be missed?
To be fair, Miami’s situation is not the result of roster mismanagement by Pat Riley. As a matter of fact it was the complete opposite. Riley had the team equipped with four point guards, which made pundits believe that at least one would be expendable.
That is until Tyler Johnson‘s shoulder required surgery and Beno Udrih was lost for the season. And to make matters worse, they were unable to sign anyone after being handcuffed by the luxury tax.
The breakout of second-round pick Josh Richardson was the result, but the Heat cannot go into the postseason relying on him or Dragic alone. There is no guarantee that the injured Johnson will be back, and although coach Erik Spoelstra believes that Josh McRoberts can stomach some ball handling duty, he might not want to test that out against playoff pressure.
Help will be on the way, though.
With two open roster spots and a window for luxury tax-free signings about to present itself, there is almost no doubt that an extra floor general is on the way. The only question left is will it be a vet like John Lucas III or another hungry, young player like Briante Weber?
