At 21-53, there has been little to celebrate about if you are a Brooklyn Nets fan this season. When it was announced that Jarrett Jack would miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, the Nets knew it was a sign of bad things to come for the rest of the year.
Brook Lopez has had a fantastic season and most importantly he has been healthy all year. Lopez is averaging 20.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in 72 games so far. Thaddeus Young has been consistent putting in averages of 15.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 1.5 steals. The frontcourt pair has played as well as the Nets have needed them to play. The problem has been the Nets’ perimeter play since Jack was injured at the beginning of January.
Over the past few weeks, there has been a pair of surprise contributors. Those two players are shooting guards Bojan Bogdanovic and Sean Kilpatrick. Bogdanovic took the whole league by storm when he went for 44 points and eight rebounds against the Philadelphia 76ers on March 15. In the month of March, he is averaging 17.1 points on 50 percent shooting from the field. At 6-foot-8, Bogdanovic has a bright future ahead as he can shoot the ball well and has shown decent ability off the dribble.
At Cincinnati, Kilpatrick had a terrific collegiate career. As a senior he averaged 20.6 points and 4.3 rebounds. Now that the 26-year-old has gotten a chance to play, he has produced.
The 6-foot-4 guard played eight games with the Denver Nuggets on a pair of 10-day contracts. Brooklyn signed him to a 10-day contract in late February. In 15 games with the Nets, he is averaging 13.1 points on 50 percent shooting. He is shooting 42 percent from 3-point range. Most importantly he has been consistent as he has scored in double-figures in 10 straight games.
As a result of his terrific play, the Nets signed him to a multi-year contract.
With the Nets in desperate need of perimeter talent, Kilpatrick might have a significant role with the Nets next season.
