As Kobe Bryant’s career winds down, it is still unclear who will take the torch from the Los Angeles Lakers‘ veteran superstar. Bryant has been a top player in the league, as well as one of the most marketable stars. The Lakers as an organization have been spoiled in the past with all of the talent, but the last few seasons have been tough. There are some promising players on the roster, but they still need a star who can carry the team.
D’Angelo Russell has shown potential this season, and he can be a great guard in this league if he puts in the work. He still needs more consistency and must improve his overall game but is also still very young. Julius Randle is another young player who has come a long way this season, proving that he is a very good rebounder and has a developing offensive game. He has a good all-around skill set on offense, but he needs to get better going to his right as well as building a more reliable jump shot. Jordan Clarkson is another part of the young core, and he has been one of the better players on the team this season. He has the ability to develop into an important two-way player but must get better on the defense.
None of these players are ready to take over as the next star in the franchise, as each still has a long way to go. There have been flashes here and there, and the organization surely has hope that one of them will step up. The team may now need to look to free agency and hope that their money will be able to attract a player or two in the offseason. The Lakers could use some excitement for next season, as they continue to look for the next star to take over.
