Kevin Seraphin played the first five seasons of his career with the Washington Wizards, but when his contract expired last summer he decided to leave. Seraphin told the New York Post that he chose the New York Knicks because he wanted more playing time.
“I didn’t want to be in the same situation as last year where I don’t play all the time and I never know. Sometimes I feel I do everything right and I don’t get to play all the time. At one point, I was like I needed somewhere I can play.”
Seraphin was expected to supply an offensive punch off the bench behind defensive-minded starting center Robin Lopez. Unfortunately for the 26-year-old from France, things couldn’t have gone worse.
Appearing in just 45 of a possible 77 games, Seraphin’s averaging 10.9 minutes, 3.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.7 blocks on a slash line of .411/.000/.826.
Seraphin was revered for his hook shot — he averaged 70.3 percent on attempts last season — but he’s even struggled with those, averaging a measly 42.9 percent. He’s never been much of a shooter and that’s continued this season, as Seraphin is just 35.2 percent on jumpers and 38.1 percent on mid-range attempts (via NBA Stats).
He hasn’t made things any easier on himself, as 49.2 percent of his shots are defined by NBA Stats as facing a “tight” defense, meaning there’s a defender within 2-4 feet of him.
If you’ve watched him play this season that number can’t be surprising to you. In the rare occasions when Seraphin has been on the floor, he’s tried to force his offense and it’s caused mental errors and poor judgment.
Seraphin signed a one-year contract in New York and claimed he passed up multi-year commitments elsewhere. He was committed to being a Knick, but it hasn’t worked out. It would be best for both sides to just move on.
