Chicago Bulls Won't Rule Out Trading Jimmy Butler This Summer

Chicago Bulls general manager Gar Forman and vice president of basketball operations John Paxson have received a lot of heat over the last couple of seasons as the team has struggled to meet expectations. With a core that consisted of Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and Pau Gasol, the Bulls were expected to be one of the major threats to the Cleveland Cavaliers this season.

Now that the Bulls are on the outside of the playoffs looking in, there’s likely to be a number of changes made over the offseason. With the team firing head coach Tom Thibodeau last offseason and replacing him with Fred Hoiberg, the changes won’t be coming with the coaching staff, but rather with the roster.

Gasol has a player option for next season and it’s unclear if he plans to exercise it. E’Twaun Moore, Aaron Brooks and Joakim Noah are unrestricted free agents while Rose and Taj Gibson have one year left on their deals. That only leaves Butler as a potential trade target for other teams because he’s the only impact player on the roster who is under contract for more than one more season.

Despite Butler seeming to be a piece that a contending team would build around, the Bulls are reportedly ready to explore his value on the trade market this summer.

“I would say, I think John made it pretty clear we’ve got to take a look at everything,” Forman said, per Vincent Goodwill of CSNChicago.com. “We’ve got to explore all options and I don’t think there’s anything that’s off the table when you have a disappointing year like this. With that said, obviously Jimmy has had a fantastic year. From where he was to where he’s gotten to, he’s become a very, very valuable player for us.”

For a guy who’s only 26 years old, any trade for Butler  had better be a massive haul for the Bulls to even consider. This guy’s one of the best defensive shooting guards in the NBA and averaged 20.9 points, 4.8 assists and 5.3 rebounds this season. He’s one of the top-15 players in the league and the Bulls must get that type of value or they risk angering a rabid fanbase.
