The NBA announced its Defensive Player of the Year Award winner on Monday morning, and for the second year in a row the winner is San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard. While Leonard was certainly one of the best defenders in the NBA this year, there’s no way that he deserved the award over Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green.
Green finished with a 4.51 defensive real plus-minus, good for fourth in the NBA, and while Leonard finished right behind him in fifth with a 4.29, Leonard has much more help from his teammates. Tim Duncan, David West, Danny Green and Kyle Anderson all finished inside the top 40 in defensive real plus-minus while only Andrew Bogut and Festus Ezeli did so for the Warriors, and Ezeli only played 46 games due to injury.
Another reason why Green deserved the award is because he can guard any position on the court, and regularly does so. Leonard can guard one through four, but he doesn’t have the size to guard centers. The Warriors regularly went small this season with injuries to Bogut and Ezeli, and Green was tasked with playing center.
Lastly, as great as Leonard is, he benefits from playing in Gregg Popovich‘s scheme that works like a well-oiled machine. The Warriors don’t really have any other great defensive players outside of Green, which is what makes their tied for fourth defensive efficiency rating even more spectacular.
Both guys are tremendous defenders, but I think the voters missed by choosing Leonard over Green for Defensive Player of the Year.
