Despite a promising start to the 2015-16 NBA Season, the New York Knicks finished 32-50 and fired head coach Derek Fisher in the process. Aside from Carmelo Anthony and some flashes from rookie Kristaps Porzingis, there isn’t a whole lot to be excited about on the Knicks’ roster, which makes the search for a head coach particularly difficult for president Phil Jackson.
Entering Sunday, the only names being discussed publicly for the Knicks’ head coaching job were Kurt Rambis and David Blatt. Then, a report from Marc Berman of the New York Post came out that said that Jackson had met with Golden State Warriors assistant coach Luke Walton about the job.
While Walton is certainly one of the top names on the coaching market, Frank Isola of the New York Daily News basically squashed the hopes and dreams of Knicks fans. He followed up Berman’s report, saying that Walton indicated he’s not interested in the Knicks job at this time, and it’s “unclear [if or when] they’ll talk again.”
It’s a sad state of affairs when the Knicks job isn’t one of the premier positions available, but that’s the current situation. The top coaches don’t feel like they can go in and win right away with the current roster, and it’s making things difficult for Jackson to make a splash hire. Without an immediate plan on how to improve this team, it’s hard to see anyone but Rambis getting the job at this point.
