The Golden State Warriors lost Game 3 against the Houston Rockets thanks to a late jumper by James Harden. The lack of enthusiasm shown by the Rockets’ bench after Harden’s clutch shot displayed how little chemistry this group possesses. Dwight Howard in particular, did not appear to be pleased about the win.
And that is the main reason why the Warriors shouldn’t panic. They are still leading the series 2-1, and there is no point in risking Stephen Curry‘s health by playing him in Game 4. He is clearly not right at the moment, and the Warriors have enough talent and focus to win this series without him. The Rockets are a complete mess when it comes to how their stars get along, and Golden State is on the opposite end of the spectrum in that regard.
Harden scored 35 points in Game 3, but it was his final bucket that saved the day.
“The last shot was typical of what James does,” Rockets coach J.B. Bickerstaff said to ESPN. “The move, we’ve seen before. The finish, we’ve seen before. You do get spoiled by it at times, but in these biggest of moments, you can’t help but appreciate it.”
Houston blew what had been a 17-point lead, and Harden’s heroics were clearly not appreciated by Dwight Howard. That is a guy who looks like he is ready for vacation and free agency. Howard was pulled from the game after head coach Steve Kerr ordered his team to foul Dwight late in the fourth quarter to put the center on the line. Howard bricked two free throws, and that caused Bickerstaff to plant Dwight on the pine for the game’s duration.
Curry wasn’t on the bench for Game 3 because he didn’t pack a suit for Houston, but that doesn’t mean the Warriors should cave and play him in Game 4.
Howard finished with 13 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks, but the Rockets almost never threw him the ball in the second half. The Warriors should stay the course. They’ll need Curry to be at full strength against the Los Angeles Clippers in the second round, and it could hurt their chances of winning the championship if they play him too soon after this ankle issue.
