Steve Kerr‘s name is now in the history books as part of the two best regular-season teams of all time, but he shouldn’t have won the NBA‘s Coach of the Year award for the 2015-16 season.
Why not? Well, he missed over half of the season after complications from two back surgeries in the summer, and Luke Walton manned the ship during that time. If the voters really wanted to reward the Golden State Warriors, then why couldn’t Walton and Kerr have been co-winners? That wouldn’t have been an unrealistic way to go about it.
Gregg Popovich definitely should’ve gotten more votes, though. The San Antonio Spurs look poised to take the title right now, and a lot of that has to do with how he manages his team. They are almost completely healthy. Meanwhile, the Warriors will be without reigning MVP Stephen Curry for two weeks after he sprained his MCL, and the Los Angeles Clippers could be without Chris Paul for the duration of the playoffs after he broke his hand on Monday night.
The Warriors got off to a 24-0 start this season with Kerr still out with his back issues, and they were clearly gunning for 73 wins after that point. Walton had a record of 39-4 as interim head coach in Steve’s absence, and Luke deserves a lot of credit for keeping this crew focused on winning games.
The Warriors must not relax. They are up 3-1 on the Houston Rockets currently, but that team came back from this exact deficit against the Clippers in last year’s postseason. Curry should be back in the next round, but who knows what kind of rhythm Los Angeles or the Portland Trail Blazers will have built up by that time? The Warriors will probably have no problem getting to the Western Conference Finals, though.
Kerr is one of the best coaches in the NBA. Nobody is denying that, but someone else should have won the Coach of the Year award.
