Kevin Durant will have a lot of decisions to make this summer. His Oklahoma City Thunder are currently tied 1-1 in a series with the San Antonio Spurs, but there have been rumblings of a different nature during the playoffs that concern free agency. Durant will have many suitors once he starts taking meetings on July 1, and it has been rumored recently that the Spurs might try creating some cap room to make adding him possible.
Obviously, the Thunder would love to keep him in the fold, but he needs to look elsewhere if a championship isn’t possible in Oklahoma. The Thunder could put together a great case for keeping him around by winning this series and seriously challenging the Golden State Warriors in the next round. But if the Thunder exit the playoffs quickly, then it will be time for Durant to move on. Russell Westbrook would likely follow suit in the 2017 offseason, but he might enjoy having the spotlight to himself as well.
If Durant leaves the Thunder, then the location for him is quite clear. The Warriors would become the greatest shooting team in the history of the game with Kevin on their roster, and they would be an unstoppable squad for the next three years at least. A lot of NBA players keep homes in Los Angeles, and so it wouldn’t be much different if that trend spread out to Silicon Valley.
The main reason the Spurs don’t have a shot at signing Durant is cap space. Head coach Gregg Popovich and company would have to move a combination of Danny Green, Boris Diaw, and Patty Mills to even come close to fitting in another max contract. They’d definitely be a better team by getting Durant on their roster, but it just isn’t realistic. Durant will probably not be on the Thunder next year, but he certainly won’t be on the Spurs.
