In case you missed it, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry was named the first-ever unanimous winner of the NBA MVP Award on Tuesday. While most outlets were busy praising Curry for his amazing accomplishment, ESPN’s Tracy McGrady looked at it a different way.
While I loved McGrady as a player, and respect him as an analyst, taking this kind of stance seems like a slap in the face to what Curry has accomplished this season. There’s no way to compare today’s NBA to the past or to say how Curry would’ve fared. All I know is that we just witnessed one of the most spectacular single seasons in history.
McGrady wants to say that someone like LeBron James should’ve received at least one first place vote to keep Curry from being a unanimous selection; however, James, Russell Westbrook and Kawhi Leonard did not have seasons nearly as impactful as Curry’s. He averaged 30.1 points, 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds despite sitting out the fourth quarter in 17 of his team’s 82 games.
Old school guys like McGrady will always say that the competition was better back in their day, and that’s fine, but he also needs to accept what Curry did and give him his props.
