The Oklahoma City Thunder are in complete control of the Golden State Warriors right now, and head coach Billy Donovan is the main cause of this. The Warriors lost 133-105 on Sunday night, and they had no answer for the Thunder in transition. Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant led the charge on the fast break, and they are currently up 2-1 in the series.
The Warriors went to their “Death Lineup” when they were down by 13 points in the second quarter, and the Thunder countered by pushing the lead to 25 by halftime. They frustrated the Warriors to the point that their players are going for groin shots. Anybody who tells you that Draymond Green kicking Steven Adams in the crotch appeared unintentional is delusional. Green is a smart dude. He knew what was happening, and he followed through on that kick.
The league needs to suspend him at least one game for a lot of reasons, and the first is that he actually hit Adams in the nether regions during Game 2 as well. Also, the NBA just suspended Dahntay Jones for striking Bismack Biyombo below the belt in the Eastern Conference Finals. The league must show some consistency.
If Green had been kicked out of Sunday night’s game, then it might be a different story. That would’ve counted as his punishment, but the league can’t establish a precedent where a role player gets suspended for a game when a star player doesn’t after pretty much the same intent or action.
Donovan deserves a lot of credit for keeping his team focused during a series in which a lot of unnecessary fouls are being committed. He has gotten the best out of Westbrook and Durant, and the head coach has created a system in which Steven Adams and Enes Kanter can thrive as big men playing second fiddle to the stars. A lot of their points may come off of offensive rebounds, but it has been working out so far. Donovan has outwitted Warriors coach Steve Kerr in this series, and the Thunder are two wins away from the NBA Finals as a result.
