Pretty much every franchise in the NBA wants to sign Kevin Durant this summer, but there is one that many aren’t talking about as a potential destination for him. That team is the Los Angeles Clippers, and Durant would fit into that rotation like a glove. It would be an interesting experiment to be sure.
Head coach Doc Rivers would certainly enjoy having a small forward of KD’s quality, but there is a wrinkle that might keep this from ever being a possibility. The Clippers won’t have as much cap room as other teams this summer, and the only legitimate way they could get Durant would be through a sign-and-trade deal that includes Blake Griffin.
That, however, is a reason why Kevin might be okay with this move, because he would be leaving the people of Oklahoma with one of their own. Griffin is from there originally and won four state titles in high school. He then went on to play two seasons for the Oklahoma Sooners before becoming the No. 1 overall pick by the Clippers in 2009.
But the last year has been pretty bad for Griffin. He punched out a team employee (and friend) to earn himself a lengthy suspension, and he struggled to gel with teammates after his return.
The problem for the Oklahoma City Thunder is that if they were to bring Griffin into the fold, then what would they do with Steven Adams, Serge Ibaka and Enes Kanter? One of those guys would have to leave if Blake came on board. Durant has less than a month to think about how his season ended before free agency begins, and it wouldn’t be surprising for him to take a few meetings on July 1. At the end of the day, Durant should probably stay in Oklahoma for at least another season to see what he and Russell Westbrook can do in a final run at the championship. After that, it might be time for both guys to move on.
