The pre-NBA draft craziness really hit full gear on Wednesday afternoon when a couple of trades occurred that shook the landscape of the league.
Jeff Teague was traded to the Indiana Pacers in the first move of the day, but the second contained a bigger name. The New York Knicks acquired former MVP Derrick Rose from the Chicago Bulls in a five-player deal. The Knicks will also acquire Justin Holiday and a second-round pick while the Bulls will acquire Robin Lopez, Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant.

While the trade is mutually beneficial for both sides, it probably will not end up moving the needle too far for either team. In particular, this trade for the Knicks has the potential to have a very small impact and virtually does nothing to improve the team.
Rose is still a solid player at the NBA level, and while he is still just 27 years old, he has some serious injury problems. Rose has missed a lot of time across his career. Notably, he played in only 10 games during the 2012-14 seasons and it was questionable about whether or not he would be able to ever stay healthy. He was able to play in 51 games in 2014-15 and then played 66 games this past season, so some of those concerns have evaporated. Still, he could go down at any moment and that could be a major issue for the team.
If Rose were to get hurt, this deal actually would not put the team in a terrible position. Rose’s contract is set to expire after the season, so if he does not perform up to expectations, then the Knicks can easily part ways with him. If he can play at a solid level, then he may help the team win a few more games than last year.
However, giving up Lopez and the young Grant may end up hurting the team in the long run. Lopez played very well for the team last season and Grant flashed potential as a bench point guard. They were two solid role players who the Knicks will have to replace at some point.
For the Bulls, this trade will likely benefit them. They no longer wanted Rose to be a part of their future, and they managed to get rid of him. They got a couple of decent role players in return, and this trade will make it possible for them to either trade Jimmy Butler or possibly move up in the draft to get one of the top point guard prospects.
In all, this was probably an even trade for both sides. Still, the Knicks are banking more on Rose’s potential, which might make this deal favor the Bulls at the end of the day.
